The Refugee Civil Law Clinic (RCLC) provides free civil legal advice and assistance to refugees and asylum seekers in Brisbane, Queensland who have been in Australia for less than 5 years.
Assistance from the RCLC
The RCLC can help clients with civil law matters, including:
- Fines, infringement notices and enforcement warrants issued by the State Penalties and Enforcement Registry (SPER);
- Debts, Loan Agreements and Bankruptcy;
- Consumer issues;
- Housing and tenancy issues;
- Centrelink or other social security issues;
- Guardianship or administration issues;
- Employment;
- Police Powers; and
- Discrimination.
The RCLC cannot provide direct assistance with immigration, family or criminal law matters, but can refer clients on to alternative service providers for assistance.
How the RCLC works
The RCLC is supported by Corrs Chambers Westgarth and is conducted at the Multicultural Development Association Inc (MDA) at 28 Dibley Street, Woolloongabba, Queensland 4102.
The RCLC runs fortnightly on Mondays between 2-4pm. To make an appointment with the RCLC, please call MDA on (07) 3337 5400.
RCLC volunteer lawyers provide advice and ongoing assistance when required by undertaking research and/or casework. Volunteers also provide assisted referrals if there is another agency better suited to dealing with a client's needs.
Continuing Legal Education
RCLC volunteer lawyers participate in the Homeless Persons' Legal Clinic continuing legal education program.
