Refugee Civil Law Clinic

How it works
Volunteer lawyer training
Contact us

The Refugee Civil Law Clinic (RCLC) provides free legal advice and assistance to refugees, humanitarian entrants, asylum seekers and temporary protection visa holders.

Those attending the clinic can receive help with:

Fines, infringement notices and enforcement warrants issued by the State Penalties and Enforcement Registry (SPER);
Debts, Loan Agreements and Bankruptcy;
Consumer issues;
Housing and tenancy issues;
Centrelink or other social security issues;
Guardianship or administration issues;
Employment;
Police Powers; and
Discrimination.

The Clinic cannot provide direct assistance with immigration, family or criminal law problems, but can refer clients on to alternative service providers for assistance.

How it worksBack to top

The clinic is run with the assistance of volunteer lawyers employed by Corrs Chambers Westgarth and is conducted at the premises of the Multicultural Development Association Inc, 512 Stanley Street, South Brisbane.

The Clinic runs fortnightly on Mondays from 2pm - 4pm.

Volunteer lawyers attending the Clinic provide advice and may assist clients on an ongoing basis by undertaking research and/or casework. Volunteer lawerys may also refer matters to other firms, agencies or projects better suited to dealing with a client's particular needs.

All RCLC work is undertaken on a pro bono basis. Without the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our member firms the RCLC would not exist.

Volunteer lawyer trainingBack to top

RCLC volunteer lawyers participate in the Homeless Persons Legal Clinic continuing legal education program.

Education sessions are held once a month and are hosted by participating firms on a rotational basis. The host firm either arranges for in-house lawyers to give a presentation or may organise for external speakers from relevant organisations to present.

In the past training has been provided by organisations such as Legal Aid Queensland, the State Penalties Enforcement Registry, the Adult Guardian, Caxton Legal Centre, Tenants Union of Queensland, Welfare Rights Centre, the Department of Housing and the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Legal Service.
